The kingdom of Bethany was once a beautiful place made up of five magical nations, each with their own special gifts. It all changed in a day, however, when the murderous dredgelings arrived. No one quite knows where they came from or how they keep multiplying, no matter how many are killed in the long, cruel war they’ve waged. All seems to be lost, until a human girl named Taylor is mistakenly transported to Bethany. Kane, the king over these nations, despises her whole-heartedly at first, and then she makes him laugh for the first time since the devastation began years ago. And the earthling manages to find new ways to surprise him with her valor and loyalty every single day. Unfortunately, Taylor’s only wish through their dangerous quest to reunite three magical stones and save the kingdom, aside from surviving this fearful place, is to return home. But as fate goes, she soon discovers the only way to recapture the stones and save the lives of the royals she’s come to love as her first real family is to give up any hope of ever returning to her old life. In the end it all comes down to what sort of hero she truly is, one to her own self, or one to entire nations.

Excerpt
Ten gruesome figures stood around a rusty cage that held two identical little girls with long messy black hair. The girls sat right in the middle, as far away from the bars as they could manage, and hugged each other tightly. Both were crying and trembling in dirty blue dresses. Taylor felt herself trembling, as well. The fear she felt at the sight of the dredglings was even more terrifying than the first time she’d seen them. Now she was alone, the sunlight revealing every hideous feature. But if she ran away, the girls would probably die, killing a part of her four friends with them. The cage’s door was only held shut by an old unraveling rope. Charity and Hope would be easy to free if she could just get past the dredglings. There was absolutely no way she could take them all on alone, though. She remembered the firecrackers. Carefully, she rolled to her side and slipped her hand in her pocket. Stupid wrapper, she thought when she realized she would have to take it off. Paper was noisy no matter what. “Yes, let’s kill them now,” the second dredgling said. “I’ll take the one on the right and you take the one on the left.” Taylor lay on top of her hands and the package to tear it open. “No!” one of the girls shrieked. “Hack, cut them from their confines!” “Cut them out yourself,” a third voice said. Taylor slid the fireworks out and took out her lighter. She tried to light it, but didn’t get a flame. “What was that?” Hack said. Come on, come on, come on. She tried it again, this time getting it to light just long enough to ignite the fuse. “Cult, go see what’s up there,” a dredgling said. “You go see what’s up there.” Taylor tossed the fireworks over the tree into the ditch and covered her ears. “BLACK MAGI—” The explosions cut the dredgling off and then they were all shouting almost as loud. Taylor looked around the tree and watched the dredglings run away through the ditch in both directions, all except for one that had crouched behind the cage and its screaming girls. She reached for her sword, but decided instead to grab her knife. It felt more natural than the sword did and was easier to use. Even the rope would have been a pain to cut off with a sword. She stood up and ran into the ditch, head pounding with fear. Hopefully, the dredgling would stay where it was. It was too much like a human to kill. She felt fear like she couldn’t imagine, as if she were surrounded by dredglings already, the torture and death only moments away, as she forced herself closer and closer to the one still crouching on the ground with its elongated hands over its head.

Q&A with the Author:
1. What inspired your book?
In the early nineties I wrote the script for a church Christmas musical about a group of young angels who were supposed to organise accommodation in Bethlehem for Joseph and Mary (spoiler: they didn’t have much luck trying to get a booking at the Bethlehem Hilton). I liked the concept of angel adventures but (since this at the time when my wife was somewhat pregnant and I had decided to quit the theatre) thought I’d write a series of books instead. Only problem was that, though at the time I dreamed up the backstory (focus on angels who were exiled from Heaven at the time of the Great Rebellion but chose not to go with Lucifer), I had no idea what the front story would be.
I played with the idea over the next twenty years, but didn’t really get anywhere until I came across the real-life story of “The New Chronicles”, written in the fourteenth century (in the midst of the Black Plague) by a Florentine citizen named Giovanni Villani. I figured out how to incorporate his story into mine, and began to write what was supposed to be the first novel featuring my Outcast Angels.
Got about a third of the way through and then changed direction and decided to write a series of novellas instead, to take advantage of the way that Amazon works when it comes to ebooks. Parked the novel in the meantime.
What did I know? The first novella (planned for around 40,000 words) blew up into ACADEMY OF SECRETS, a full-fledged novel of some 115,000 words (first edition), trimmed back to 100,000 words for the second edition.
2. How do you spend your free time
Watch Netflix and YouTube and re-watch my favorite flicks on DVD. Occasionally go to blockbuster movies with my two (now all grown up) sons

1 I’m from New Zealand, the country whose landscape graces Sir Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” trilogies. And no, I don’t live in Mordor but in the country’s biggest city, Auckland
2 I’ve been a Marvel comics fan since I bought my first Marvel comic in May 1964 (Daredevil Vol 1 No 28, "Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Neighbor's Planet!", since you asked)
3 “My” Doctor is the first doctor, whom I first encountered when the series was first launched in the early sixties
4 I’ve been a writer since I was a teenager, and first started getting paid for my writing at the tender age of 17, working at my local radio station for $30 a week as an advertising copywriter
5 I write virtually every day – but, usually, what I’m writing is training courses (I have my own business offering online courses in digital marketing). To find time to write my “Academy of Secrets” book meant getting up at 3 and 4 o’clockin the morning for a couple of months, writing for several hours and then switching to paid work.
6 I used to write (and direct) stage plays, but deliberately/sadly retired from the theatre when my first child arrived (in 1991) – theatre is just too time-consuming to be a parent as well
7 I wrote my first actual book in 2005 – a “how to” non-fiction book about our local eBay equivalent, Trade Me. It was very successful, selling out in six weeks (in the days when we only had physical books to play with) and spawning a reprint and a revised second edition.
8 I first went online in 1987, paying US$2 a minute to access the Internet via CompuServe. In those pre-world-wide-web days, we could access a staggering 700 newspaper and magazine databases, typically paying anywhere from $1 to $25 per article (on top of the per-minute charges) to download content.
9 The first real fantasy book I read was “The Fellowship of the Ring”, which I discovered in our local library when I was about 12.
10 I’ve been a science fiction fan forever, growing up with Heinlein, Asimov, Pohl and other greats. My preference has always been hard scifi.

GENRE: Paranormal Thriller
Sometimes even the dead seek salvation.
In 1925, eighteen-year-old Ameerah Arrowood is murdered in an insane asylum. She finds herself transported to a dreary realm that turns out to be a recruiting station for the dark spirits. With animosity in her heart toward humanity, she decides to join them.
For the next ninety years, Ameerah possesses soulless humans, living a hedonistic, mischievous and sometimes vengeful existence, but now she's seeking salvation so she can crossover and save her lost love who is stuck in the lower world.
Ameerah enlists the help of her dark spirit friend Derek, who is straddling the line between Heaven and Hell. She tells him how it all began, weaving between historical timelines to now, hoping to gain understanding about why her parents betrayed her and wanting to get rid of the guilt weighing on her heart. In the end, the unexpected unfolds, which changes her forever.
We entered an uncarpeted, vacant hallway that branched out on both ends. Several metal doors with bolts lined the walls. The blue paper booties I wore crinkled against the bottoms of my feet sliding across the shiny white floor.
“What did they give me?” I asked when we stepped into the restroom straight across from the room I was in.
Ann led me to a stall with no door, only an off-white partition that separated it from the other johns. “It was a barbiturate used to sedate patients. Sleep therapy is what some doctors dubbed it.” She continued to talk while I emptied my bladder, keeping her word to give me as much privacy as she could.
Once I finished, I went to the sink and cringed at my reflection in the mirror. The right side of my face had a purple, yellowish bruise across my cheek, and the luster in my hazel eyes was gone. My complexion had a grayish cast. Whatever was injected into my body created a carbon copy of myself.
Ann handed me a washrag, and I realized there was no hot water when I went to dampened it. After I cleaned off my eyes and face, we headed down the north side of the hall. I listened to Ann tell me that most of the residents were in the common room, which explained the eerie silence.
“There you are,” a manly nurse with thick forearms and a broad forehead said when we rounded the corner from another corridor. She was heading our way and seemed quite annoyed.
Ann stiffened but held her head high. “Ameerah caught my attention. She needed to use the lavatory, and now I’m taking her to the dining room for lunch.”
“I realize you’re new here, Ann,” the other nurse said, “but we do not call patients by their first name in their presence. Each one has a number.” She pointed at me. “This one is number sixty-four.”
A laugh of disbelief escaped my lips. I couldn’t help it. What type of place was this, sedating people, tying them to a bed, and calling them by numbers instead of their names? I found being called Sixty-four another check in the box under the dehumanization category. “Excuse me,” I said when they looked at me, “I don’t know what type of facility I’m in, but regardless, I have a name. It’s Ameerah. To refer to me by a number is demonizing my identity, so I’d appreciate it if you would stick with my name instead.”
The coarse nurse scowled. “We will do no such thing.”
I made a face. “Why? What’s the purpose in such a demoralizing act? And what the hell is this place?”
Still scowling the nurse snapped, “Watch your mouth.”
“You’re in an insane asylum,” Ann said.

Camila turns her body to face Marshall. Lifting her hand, she runs a finger down the side of his face. He catches her hand and trails kisses around her palm. From there he runs his tongue up her index finger and sucks. He continues to suck on her fingers relentlessly, each one stirring her craving for sex even more than the last. She smiles to herself. This dare will be far easier than I thought.
She sits astride Marshall on the bench, careful not to tear her dress. âYou sure about this?â He asks.
âWhy do you ask?â Camila rubs his cock from outside his trousers. âYou want to hear me say that I want to be with you?â
âYeah, I do,â he replies before crushing his lips against Camilaâs. Like last time, this kiss blows her away with its intensity, as he alternates between tender caresses and biting her bottom lip. Unlike last time, thereâs an undercurrent of desperation behind it because they both know the weekend will end and their City lives will resume, where neither one will be able to touch the other. Somehow that prospect of it ending before it even begins drives them further into the moment, passion superseding all reason and doubt.
Camila doesnât speak right away. She wants her kisses to speak her desire for her. For her tongue to find his and to stroke it the way he stroked her pussy that morning in her apartment. She brings her hands to his face, gripping him with the intensity of a lover whoâs saying both hello and good-bye. Itâs truly liberating to own this level of freedom with someone knowing that the present is all they have. She can feel his erection grow and press against her cunt, growing slicker with every kiss and lick against her lips. Camila draws his left hand under her dress so he can feel her desire.
Marshall moans into the next kiss, taking her deeper as he buries two fingers inside of Camila. She cries out silently, only a jagged breath shattering the stillness around them. Time has literally ceased to exist in this moment between the two lovers as they continue to climb toward their mutual pleasure. Camila lowers the zipper of his pants, freeing his cock. Marshall hisses as she begins to stroke him. What he wouldnât give to feel himself inside her warm mouth right now. He groans as he bites down on Camilaâs lips, remembering how it felt when she took him deep inside her. He starts to penetrate Camila faster. He wants to fuck her this way and so many others right here on this bench. How perfect and poetic to have someone like Camila on the Baron estate where heâd lost his virginity to Dahlia, the eldest of the twin daughters, all those years ago in the pool house. To bring such light to a place that represents so many memories from his past fills him with such a sense of peace he doesnât want it to end.
Marshall takes out his fingers and licks them before putting them in Camilaâs mouth. She sucks on them hard. The idea that these fingers were just inside her pussy drives her further into her lust. She lowers herself over his cock, prepared for how deep he would go and how far it would stretch her. This time her eyes are open, watching the look of pleasure on his face as she takes him fully.
His moan is louder than it should be, but neither of them cares. She rides him slowly this time, with greater purpose than before. Each time, she wants to feel him deep inside her, and he wants to savor it too. Marshall pulls Camila tight to him, burying his groans into her mouth, his kisses conveying a warmth and gratitude for tonight, for that morning in her apartment, and for feeling so fucking good at this moment.
He buries his face in her breasts as he continues to thrust into her. Her cries match his. Both are so close to coming, but neither of them is ready to. The reality after the fact will hit them both, and they want to push it away as long as they can. Marshall wraps his arms around her tighter, unable to edge any longer. âIâm going to come,â he whispers.
Camila nods as she rides him harder, lifting herself off, and slamming down so she feels it in her G-spot. She draws a deep breath, finally reaching that deep abyss as Marshall stops thrusting and lets himself go.
